By 1984, my dad had made a name for himself in the marketing world. He was the 1970 DMAW Hall of Leaders Award recipient, a business owner, and the author of two books. While working for a non-profit organization in the D.C. metro area he recognized the lack of exceptional service from local mailshops for smaller direct mail campaigns. As a recent college graduate, I borrowed my father’s insight and $10,000 and started SMS Direct, founded on the principle of providing the exceptional service that was lacking in the direct mail production industry on smaller mailings. Back then, we didn’t have high speed inserters or laser printers, but we did have a commitment to our customers and a passion for direct mail.
